HOLSTON MOUNTAIN--WATAUGA RIVER DISTRICT

Mountain Bicycle Trails

There are no trails designated for bicycles in the Watauga Ranger District, but bikes are allowed on some trails and roads. All forest roads (FR) open to motorized vehicles are open to bicycles, and all gated forest roads closed to motorized vehicles are open to bicycles unless signs specify they are closed to bicycles. Horse trails are open to bicycles.

No bicycles are allowed on the AT or blue-blazed foot trails (with some signed exceptions). There are more than 200 miles of forest roads in Carter, Johnson, and Sullivan counties, ranging from high-standard gravel to primitive.

In the Watauga Ranger District, the following roads are suggested routes for bicycles:

  • Denton Valley Road (FR 32), 18 miles long in Sullivan County, is a paved and gravel road.
  • Flatwoods Road (FR 87 and old 87), 22 miles long, runs along the southeastern edge of South Holston Lake from the Virginia border south to near Biltmore, north of Elizabethton.
  • Forest Road 87A (3.9 miles long) and 87B (5.3 miles long ) in Sullivan County are gated gravel roads and are extensions of the Flatwoods Horse Trail.
  • McQueens Knob Road (FR 69), 5.4 miles long in Johnson and Sullivan counties, is a gravel road.
  • Pine Mountain Road (FR 4002), 5.4 miles long, and Dogwood Bench Road (FR 4431), 7.6 miles long, in Sullivan County are managed as gated closed roads.
